The last photo

One of my favourite photos belongs from the photojournalism of war, but this shows the last minutes of Salvador Allende, president of my country between 1970 and 1973.

Its author was Leopoldo Víctor Vargas, Air force’s sub-officer and presidential photographer. Taken in September 11th, 1973, nearly 9:45 in the morning, this is one of last photos in the Allende’s life. That was the last Chilean coup d’état and it means the beginning of fascism’s era.

Oh no!!! :(

This photo shows Allende being escorted by two members of “Personal Friends Group” (GAP in Chile), president’s personal protection guards. With a war helmet in his head and a rifle, he is in the Moneda Palace preparing the defence of the Popular Union’s government.

I like this photo because represents the courage and honour of a dreamer man. He really believes in a better world build by the people’s power. This photo shows the socialist force!!!

Finally, this photo won the “Photo of the year 1973” prize in World Press Photo, an organization known for holding the prestigious annual press photography contest.
